Georgia Tech-TU Munich-Siemens Checklist and Tips
International Plan and other Students participating in this program, or in study abroad only at TUM, should observe the following checklist:
Students participating in the International Plan need to obtain four signatures that can be accomplished during your visits to your Major Advisor, OIE, Work Abroad, and Modern Languages. Save a trip and fill out the appropriate OIE FORMS available online (please read the guidelines!) before or as you make your stops. IP students in the GIT-TUM-Siemens (or other German company) see especially page 8.
Seven Easy Steps:
- Submit your resume as early as possible to Prof. McKnight. This step is necessary to get you into the information loop and into the student pool. Once you have submitted your email, you officially become part of the pool of students in the TUM/Siemens program and will recieve updates via email.
- Obtain additional information and advice on the TUM academic program and on the Siemens internship program from either Prof. Bettina Cothran or Prof. Phil McKnight. If you are interested in other German companies besides Siemens for the internship, consult with Debbie Gulick in the Work Abroad Office. Either Cothran or McKnight can sign the form for Modern Languages. Get Signature.
- Consult with your academic advisor. If you are an IP student, be sure to consult with your IP advisor. Get signature. (Tip: you may want to get some or all of the other signatures first).
- If you are and IP student, also consult with Karen Pierce, Curriculum Integration Coordinator for the International Plan in the Office of International Education.Your form needs a signature from her, and she can help you locate the IP advisor in your unit, if you don’t know who it is. Get signature.
- Visit study abroad advisor Lorie Paulez or Jennifer Evanuik in the Office of International Education and fill out appropriate OIE application forms for Study Abroad. Get signature.
- Visit work abroad advisor Debbie Gulick in the Work Abroad Office and fill out the Work Abroad application forms. Note that you will be expected to complete evaluations of your work abroad experiences when you return. Get signature. Sign up for the Work Abroad Fair with Debbie Gulick, which will take place together with the GT Career Fair in September.
- Submit your updated resume to Prof. McKnight in January, who will forward the resumes of students in appropriate engineering, science and computing fields to Siemens recruiters, and will schedule appointments with Siemens recruiters in break-out rooms on campus during the Work Abroad Fair. Students approved by Siemens (this takes up to a month) will be notified that they are accepted into the TUM-Siemens program. Students should also interview with other German companies.
Afterwards, you will also need to do the following: (submit to Prof. McKnight)
- Read the information and guidelines for foreign students and then complete the TUM Online Bewerbung auf Deutsch. This can wait until March or April.
- Consult with McKnight or Cothran on this. It requires a short essay written in German. Note that a) once you submit it online to TUM you cannot edit it again; plus b) you need to save it and submit the paper copy later with your signature and the essay.
- Have your current transcripts sent to McKnight.
- Provide one passport photo to be sent to TUM. It will go with your paper copy of the online application.
-
Complete the FCA form for courses to be completed abroad: Foreign Credit Approval Form, signed by your advisor.
- Note that the courses you will list in general are catalog courses, and may or may not be offered in the Winter Semester at TUM.
- Consult with the TUM web catalog to locate course offerings in your field (see McKnight or Cothran for help if needed).
- Special tip: go to the list of Fakultäten (academic departments). Each department has numerous sub units and institutes. You may find extensive materials regarding course offerings, probably more up-to-date, and study programs. Look for Semester Project courses as well, which group students, industry engineers and faculty to complete practical design projects. These project courses are excellent preparation for an internship. Check with McKnight or Cothran for assistance.
- Note that the academic structures at TUM are different than at GT. For example, AE consists of three Institutes located in Mechanical Engineering (Maschinenwesen) at TUM: Lehrstuhl für Raumfahrttechnik, Lehrstuhl für Flugantriebe, and Lehrstuhl für Flugmechanik und Flugregelung. You will also find subjects like Mechatronics, Logistics and Biomedical Technology under Maschinenwesen. Click on the Institute links. Same is true in the other Fakultäten—expect to find different subjects. Always check out Informatik and Elektrotechnik as well. Another example: Under Wirtschaftswissenschaften you will also find Sozialwissenschaften, including Political Science, Environmental Policy, History of Technology, etc.
Next Steps:
- When the entire package is ready for all GIT students planning to participate in the TUM exchange program, McKnight will submit the package to Paulez in OIE, and she will send in the package to TUM via FedEx.
- You also must register for FS 4000 for Fall Semester at Georgia Tech (see Lorie Paulez). If you are an IP student, you must also register for IPFS 3012.
- OIE requires attendance at Study Abroad Orientations. Please review these materials and all information regarding study abroad on this site.
- The TUM Center for International Affairs will process the forms received, secure housing for participants and arrange the pre-program.
- Plan to arrive in Munich by Sept. 1 for the standard required pre-semester advanced German course and orientation. The TUM International Office will help you obtain your student visa and Aufenthaltserlaubnis. You do not need to obtain a visa prior to departure. Separate housing will be provided during Septermber, before moving into you dorm in October.
- You may elect to arrive in early or mid-August to complete the more intensive TestDaf prep course at TUM, but you will then also be required to complete the orientation (TUMi) and event sas part of the September German intensive course. See also more information, including about intensive German courses during the semester.
- During September you will be placed with a TUM academic advisor for you major. You will finalize your course schedule for the Winter Semester at this time. You must submit the final schedule to your IP advisor at GT for approval as well. Academic semester at TUM: October 15-February 15.
