Georgia Tech Chinese Language Placement Test

The test will become invalid if you falsely misrepresent your language skills. By taking this test, you agree that you will do your best in answering all questions. If you deliberately misrepresent your proficiency level and is found out during the class, you will be forced to withdraw from the course even after you have enrolled in the course.

All questions are given in simplified Chinese, with traditional characters provided in parentheses. If the questions below do not appear in Chinese, please go to the Online Language Support Center and reconfigure your language options (Step 1).

  1. All students who have Chinese background and intend to enroll in CHIN 1000s or 2000s must take this test.
If you are able to read Chinese newspaper, have finished elementary school in a Chinese society (mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc.) OR Chinese school in the U.S., you must enroll in CHIN 3000s or 4000s. If you have no formal training for the Chinese language and you are NOT a Chinese heritage speaker (a "Chinese heritage speaker" means that you grew up in an environment in which Mandarin or a Chinese dialect is spoken regularly), there is no need to take this test—enroll in CHIN 1001.

Your enrollment is subject to availability of seats in the class. The Chinese faculty reserve the final right to place you at an appropriate level.
