All majors are required to create and maintain a portfolio of artifacts that you have produced in your language and which demonstrate your knowledge and familiarity with cultural constructs in your language area. You should have at least 3-4 artifacts in your portfolio, 1 for each of the following areas:
We suggest that you include artifacts which you have produced in conjunction with the language classes you have taken in the above areas. Examples would include:
All majors should set up their portfolio in their freshman year, or when they declare the ALIS/GEML/IAML major; you may update your portfolio at any time.
You will use the CareerTech portfolio online tool housed on GT's Career Services website to create and manage your portfolio. Here's the link: https://gtwebapps.gatech.edu/cfeis/careertech/index.cfm
When it is time to complete your degree petition prior to graduating, you will provide the access key (via the exit survey) to your language advisor. Providing this access key will allow your language advisor to review your portfolio and refer to your artifacts when it comes time to contribute to the end-of-year reports that the School of Modern Languages produces as a part of the assessment process of all of our language programs. Your confidentiality will be protected. The portfolio will not enter into determining your grades for any language courses.
If you have any questions about the language portfolio, please contact your language advisor or Dr. Shook.

All graduating ALIS/GEML/IAML majors are required to fill out the exit survey as a part of completing the degree petition process.
The exit survey is a tool that is used by the administration of the School of Modern Languages to obtain feedback from graduating seniors regrading our language programs, classes, study-abroad programs, and related areas. In addition, degree canidates provide the School with their plans for after graduation and with future contact information. Finally, you will provide the access key to your language portfolio as a part of this survey. The Associate Chair for Research and Assessment will review all the information from our graduates when it comes time to contribute to the end-of-year reports that the School of Modern Languages produces as a part of the assessment process of all of our language programs. Your confidentiality will be protected.
All degree candidates are required to fill out the exit survey BEFORE their degree petition will be signed by the Associate Chair of Undergraduate Studies.
If you have any questions about the language portfolio, please contact your language advisor or Dr. Shook.
All graduating ALIS/GEML/IAML majors are required to participate in an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) as a part of completing the degree petition process.
The OPI is a tool that is used by the administration of the School of Modern Languages to gauge the progress of our graduates in terms of their language abilities via our language programs. Degree Candidates arrange an individual interview with their language advisor in the semester of their final course of the language in question; interviews are informal and require no preparation. The language advisors will relate the OPI assessment to the Associate Chair for Research and Assessment, who will review all the information from our graduates when it comes time to contribute to the end-of-year reports that the School of Modern Languages produces as a part of the assessment process of all of our language programs. Your confidentiality will be protected.
Degree candidate will be reminded of their OPI requirement during the meeting when their degree petition is signed.
If you have any questions about the language portfolio, please contact your language advisor or Dr. Shook.
