Advisement Information

GENERAL QUESTIONS about language courses and opportunities at Georgia Tech can be discussed with Dr. David Shook, Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies.These questions can include

  • transfer credit for language courses
  • credit via examination

Questions about PLACEMENT in language classes: The School of Modern Languages has centralized advising for students seeking help in determing where to begin their language studies. Students should read over our course advisement and suggested entry levels, take our online placement test, and then, if needing further information or placement help, should consult with the appropriate division coordinator:

Students wishing to declare a MINOR in one of our languages: Please download the minor declaration form; get your major advisor's signature ; get Dr. Shook's signature; then hand in the form in the Registrar's office. Dr. Shook's advising times are available here. Note that minor declaration forms will NOT be approved during registration periods. Plan ahead!

Students who are PURSUING A LANGUAGE MINOR AND FILLING OUT THEIR DEGREE PETITIONS need to verify they have completed the minor requirements. Download the Approved Program of Study form for your minor area; fill it out completely; and bring it to Dr. Shook for his signature before you see your major advisor to fill out your degree petition. Dr. Shook's availability can be found here. This should be done BEFORE you meet with your major advisor and get his/her signature on your degree petition.

Students wishing to change to or add the ALIS, GEML or IAML major. You should speak with Dr. Shook (for ALIS), Dr. Shook and Dr. Tittle (for GEML) or Dr. Shook and Stephanie Jackson (for IAML) before pursuing the change of major. Dr. Shook's advising times can be found here. Changes of major will NOT be allowed during registration periods, so plan ahead!

ALIS majors should seek advisement with the upper-division coordinator in their language (listed above) or with Dr. Shook.

GEML and IAML majors need to consult with advisors in their language (listed above or with Dr. Shook) AND from their joint School.

  • when you are about to graduate, for an exit interview

  • if you want to discuss career opportunities and career choices

  • if you have general questions about the school, the courses offered, majors, minors and certificates

  • when you need to fill out your degree petition

  • if you want to change/declare your major to/from IAML or GEML

  • if you are a freshman receiving a mid-term U
