Dr. Kyoko Masuda received her Ph.D in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching from the University of Arizona in 2002. She joined Georgia Tech in 2004 and has been promoted to Associate Professor of Japanese and Linguistics in 2010. A specialist in Discourse, Second Language Acquisition, and Cognitive Linguistics, she has published serveral articles in the journals such as Modern Language Journal, New Directions in Applied Linguistics of Japanese, Japanese Language and LiteratureNihongo Kyooiku, Southwest Journal of Linguistics, CLS, and Japanese/Korean Linguistics.  Her co-authored journal articles also apper in Second Language Research, Language Learning, Language Science, Sophia Linguistica, and High Desert Conference in Linguistics.She co-directed L.B.A.T. (summer program in Japan) from 2005-2006. Currently, she is the Linguistics Certificate ProgramAdvisor and is interested in expanding this program at Georgia Tech as well as developing new upper level courses for the Japanese major.  Her teaching includes Intermediate Japanese, Discourse and Grammar, Applied Japanese Linguistics, Critical Readings in Japanese Arts and Media, and Introduction to Linguistics.

In one of her current projects, she has been applying cognitive linguistics to grammar teaching and submitted a paper entitled "Schematic vs. pictorial representations for teaching Japanese polysemous particles: Aids to increasing levels of language awareness".
