Technical Requirements

IMPORTANT: If you are going to use your own computer, you will have no problem. However, if you have to use a lab computer or a company computer, ask your computer administrator. If you are not allowed to install new software such as Java plug-in, etc. or change its regional/language options or language input/keyboard prerferences, this online course will not work for you.

  1. Broadband Internet connection - DSL/Cable modem or Ethernet-based LAN (typically found on college campuses)
  2. Windows XP/Vista or Mac OS X (Linux may work, but we cannot answer any questions on Linux.)
  3. Microphone headset - for live virtual classroom sessions held weekly. (External speakers/Built-in speakers must be turned off.)
  4. Internet Explorer or Firefox (for Windows) or Firefox or Safari (for Mac) - Windows users may be required to install Sun Microsystem's Java plug-in.
  5. Wimba Classroom (Live Virtual Classroom) - Online Language Support Center (Step 4) for more info.
  6. Foreign-language options - Online Language Support Center (Step 1) for more info.
  7. Unicode (UTF-8) - Character Encoding in Unicode (UTF-8) is required for displaying the content in the target language. Click here to see if your browser displays characters in UTF-8.
  8. QuickTime is preferred while Windows Media Player may or may not work for all of the media files prepared for our online courses.
  9. Adobe Flash Player - Download and install a plugin module for your browser from the Adobe site.
  10. Email software - Initial communication is done through regular email.
