Q: I am interested in taking your language courses that you offer online. Can we get college credits for these courses? Do we receive grades for these courses?
A:

All GT students will receive academic credits automatically like regular classes. If you are not a GT student, to receive academic credits along with your grade, first you need to be admitted to Georgia Tech as a special student through the Undergraduate Admission Office. Only current students (or graduates) of any college or university can be admitted as a special student. Click here to apply online. High school students do not receive academic credits. After completing your online course, you need to request the Registrar's Office to send your transcript to your home institution. If you are not interested in receiving academic credits or if you are a high school student, you can register through the Professional Education as a DLPE student. We can send letters containing your grade to DLPE students upon request, but no academic credits will be given.

Q: I would like to take an online language course you offer, but I'm not sure which course I should take.
If you are not a heritage speaker of the language AND you have no (or almost no) experience in speaking the language, you should take the first course in the course sequence (1001-U for special students and 1001-UA for GT students). For all other cases, please go to our Online Placement Tests. If you have specific placement issues for online language courses, contact one of the instructors who teaches your language. Please visit Online Language Course Support site to find out the current instructors.
Q: If I take an online class from a remote location, do I have to take written exams on campus?
A:

No, you don't have to. If you cannot come to the campus location to take exams, contact your instructor at least two weeks before the exam. You can take exams at a preapproved location near you under a preapproved exam proctor. (Typically, an exam proctor is your supervisor or advisor. Proctors must sign a written agreement form to be approved.)

Q: How can I get an overload into an online course?
A:

Online courses have an initial maximum of 10 for GT students and 10 for non-GT students. If there are spaces remaining on the first day of the semester, remaining spaces will be released to all students. If you are a GT student, you must go online to request an overload to be entered into the waiting list for the course. The instructor will email you by the end of the first day of the semester if you are selected as an overload student. Priorities are shown below:

  1. majors (e.g., INTA/ML, GE/ML)
  2. those planning to take internship/LBAT in Foreign Country
  3. minors or cerficate seekers
  4. graduating seniors, seniors, juniors, sophomores, freshmen
  5. auditing students

Once your overload permit is issued, you will have 48 hours to complete your registration on OSCAR. If you still have not completed your registration by the end of that time period, your space may be given to other students.

Q: Do all online courses have a requirement for the minimum number of students?
A:

Some do, and this is noted on the registration system when you register. If a class has a minimum requirement (typically, 8), and not enough students register for the class by the end of the first week of the semester, the class may be canceled. Typically, registration for online courses start slowly and the classes tend to be filled during the last registration phase (Phase II).

Q: When is tuition due/when do I register for my class?
A:

All non-GT students accepted into the program are responsible for registering for the class and paying all required fees by the deadlines in the “Official Calendars” (professional education students should consult with professional education for relevant fee deadlines).  Your window of registration may be limited to the last phase of registration during Add/Drop period. Please read registration information carefully. The Registrar strictly enforces all stated deadlines, and Modern Languages is unable to intervene on your behalf if you miss your registration window, so please register and pay your tuition/fee on time.

Q: How much does the program cost?
A:

Professional Education (DLPE) students: Please contact DLPE office. All non-GT students (i.e. special students) for academic credit: The cost for the program is the regular, in-state tuition rate. Please go to Bursar's Office homepage to find out the current tuition rates. Faculty members cannot answer questions on tuitions and fees. Please contact Bursar's Office for more information.

Here is a way to estimate your tuition: Look for the tuition rate under "Undergraduate - Continuing Student" and multiply it by the number of credit hours plus $100 for a required technology fee. First-year courses (1001-U, 1002-U) are 4 credit hours and second-year courses (2001-U, 2002-U) are 3 credit hours. For example, if the tuition is $171 per credit hour and you are taking a 4-credit hour course:

$171 x 4 credit hours + $100 = $784

Q: I took your online course in the last semester as a special student, but my university/college says they still have not received my grade. Do I need to do something to get the academic transcript for the course I took?
A:

Yes. GT is required not to release any student records including grades to other institutions unless the student makes an individual request for it. Please contact the Registrar's Office and request your transcript to be sent to your home institution.
