About the School of Modern Languages

Hello and Welcome to the Web Site of the School of Modern Languages at Georgia Tech

The School of Modern Languages collaborates as an interdisciplinary partner with other units in the Ivan Allen College and across campus to prepare future participants in the global workforce through applied studies in foreign languages and intercultural sudies that are designed to develop advanced communication skills, promote creative thinking, open access to intercultural understanding, and develop professional competency in the language students select as their window to the world. Together, these skills and abilities serve to provide students with a global framework in which to apply problem-solving skills applicable to many different career paths for students graduating with degrees, minors or certificates in language study from the School.

Our new Applied Language and Intercultural Studies degree program delivers foreign language study in the many contexts in which other languages are spoken, including social and technical communication, cultural perspectives, industry, technology, arts and literature, media and science that will provide you with the competitive edge needed to meet 21st century language requirements of government agencies, multi-national industries, and social organizations. Our joint degree programs with International Affairs (IAML) and with Global Economics (GEML) provide a strong foundation in language study to go with excellent preparation for careers in government and industry.

We have established bridges between the languages we teach and engineering and technology units at Georgia Tech by integrating into our programs the kind of professional and social language skills you would expect to use after entering the workforce. At the same time we offer an opportunity to develop a broad understanding of culture and literature and of daily life in the countries whose languages we teach. We have collaborated with the Office of International Relations and the Work Abroad Office to develop opportunities in China, France, Egypt, Germany, Korea, Japan, Russia,  Latin America, and Spain that include language immersion with options for a semester of study in engineering, computer science, political science,  etc., and followed in many cases by an internship in the same country. These options work exceptionally well with Georgia Tech's International Plan.

Our signature summer program in Language for Business and Technology (LBAT) is highlighted on our Web site, and we encourage you to look into this program and to contact us about how to apply and to expand your international skills even more with an internship abroad.

We also encourage you to keep an eye on the Student Resources website, and especially to peruse the Jobs for Graduates site from time to time to see what opportunities may exist in the workforce to apply your skills. You will find many links to media from abroad there as well.

Learning another language can be a lifetime project, so keep at it. And most of all, go abroad! It may be the most transformational educational experience you will ever have.
